2019 Annual NHS R&D Forum Conference Update
The NHS R&D Forum are delighted to announce that Dame Fiona Caldicott & Professor Jonathan Montgomery will be taking part in a very special Plenary Session at RDF19, the 2019 Annual NHS R&D Forum.
Dr Nicola Williams, Chair of the Programme Content Group and National Director of Support & Delivery, Health and Care Research Wales said “We are delighted to welcome Dame Fiona Caldicott to the conference in 2019.
She will be interviewed on stage by Professor Jonathan Montgomery about the origins of the Caldicott guardians, their importance in research and the future challenges of protecting the use of patient information.”
Topics of social care and research, trials retention, and clinical trials beyond Brexit are also confirmed. Acadmi Wales will explore finding happiness in the workplace through Applied Positive Psychology and there is much more to come.

Abstracts are absolutely critical to the Annual Forum conference. They ensure content is current and help to spread knowledge, innovation and learning.
The programme committee are looking for oral and poster presentations that relate to the process, the structure, improving efficiency, improving quality, promoting best practice or adding value in R&D studies, teams, departments or organisations. Please rally your colleagues and teams to submit. It is a great experience and keeps our community connected and current.

Improved, new look ‘Essentials of NHS Research’
25th& 26thMarch, Bristol
The first of this new improved course ran earlier in the month and received such fantastic feedback that we’ve hurried to open bookings again. Attendees ranged from Universities, Trusts, CCGs, NIHR CRN and Government R&D departments, which led to wide and varied discussion around the topics.
A snapshot of the feedback is provided below and the course leaders are updating it already to make sure it continually improves. The new written workbook in particular was really well received so a huge thanks to Dr Allyson Bailey for leading this for the Forum.

The HRA and MHRA have published a joint statement on seeking and documenting consent using electronic methods (eConsent)
This statement sets out the legal and ethical requirements for seeking and documenting consent using electronic methods and is supported and endorsed by the UK health Departments in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales

The Care Quality Commission have published the Well-Led Inspection Framework for NHS Trusts and Foundation Trusts and Research is now recognised in W8 (p22-24)

Excess Treatment Costs and Commercial Study Set Up
The pilot of new systems for the management of ETCs and commercial study set up for studies on the NIHR Portfolio began on the 1stOctober. It is important to keep watch on the main website hereso that you are informed of any developments.
Updates include revisions and improvements to the SoECAT based upon your feedback and new resources and tools.

HRA Technical Pharmacy Assurance: New process opened 15thOctober 2018
The new process for technical pharmacy assurance opened on 15 October 2018 in England, Scotland and Wales, with the process opening in Northern Ireland once a phased rollout is complete in England and Wales.
Sites will still need to assess local capacity and capability to ensure the study is deliverable but will be saved from conducting their own, separate technical pharmacy reviews.

Slides from Embedding Research Strategy & Culture Symposium
This small Symposium drew together 50 members of the community who are leading strategy and culture in their organisations. The value of the day came from the sharing of case studies, approaches and lessons learned for driving research strategy right across the different types of organisation.
It was a hugely enjoyable and fruitful day. We will publish a blog summary soon but in the meantime you can download all of the slides here.
Positioning UK PLC as a Primary Choice for Clinical Trials
Jonathan Sheffield (NIHR CRN) and Jacqueline Johnson North (IAoCR) hosted this day, which was also attended by the HRA, MHRA, NHS Trusts and Industry leaders, including CROs. The Forum was represented and the Research Strategy and Leadership Working group will review the feedback at their November meeting.

Open for Consultation: MHRA EU Exit non-deal contingency legislation for the regulation of medicines and medical devices
This consultation seeks your views on how the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency’s (MHRA) legislation and regulatory processes would have to be modified in the event of the UK not securing a deal with the EU after the UK’s exit, with no Implementation Period. This consultation covers no-deal proposals on medicines, clinical trials and medical devices.
Closes 1stNovember for submission to the MHRA.
