RDF19: Early Bird Ends Tomorrow

The programme is live. Early bird rate ends 31st January

The early bird discount rate ends tomorrow for delegates attending RDF19 in Brighton from the 12-14 May. Demand for places this year has been overwhelming and the Main Conference Hotel is now almost fully booked. We are delighted to announce that we have secured a large number of rooms in the Jury’s Inn Waterfront Hotel. This hotel is located a very short walk from the Conference venue and is located on the seafront near Brighton Pier.

AcoRD Master Class
25th March, London 2019
£330 No Vat

This course is for Sponsors and R&D office staff, Universities, non-commercial funders, finance teams, facilitators or grant advisors who are working with researchers on their cost attribution and completion of their SoECAT for funding applications.

Materials will contain all up to date information received from DHSC and the AcoRD specialist community so that Forum members are accessing consistent training.  As this is intended to be a master class members should have completed the NIHR e learning course and have some practical experience before attending.

Data Management in a Health Care Setting 
3rd April, London

NHS R&D Forum and the Association for Clinical Data Management (ACDM). All staff involved in the operational conduct or oversight of clinical research across NHS, academic and commercial research units including Data Managers, Study Monitors, Research Managers, Study Coordinators, Sponsor representatives and other site staff. It is particularly relevant to Sponsor teams and CTU staff.

Archiving Masterclass
13th June, London

An excellent course providing expert insight into the practicalities of research archiving procedures. Developed to support Research management teams with their processes for archiving this course is for anyone who has responsibility for archiving research in their organisation.

Whether you are a named archivist or part of a team with delegated responsibility we hope that you will find this course useful. As with all Forum activities it is also a valuable opportunity to meet with your colleagues from across the country to discuss challenges and solutions.

Local Capacity and Capability for Research
New date 24th June, London

Understand the requirements of an NHS organisation when determining whether to take part in a particular research study as a host. This course explains the principles of good study set up, the information required by the R&D office and where it can be obtained.

It introduces delegates to the various systems and documents associated with research and also provides some guidance on developing relationships with key support departments and stakeholders within an NHS organisation.

The first half of the day concentrates on making delegates familiar with process. The second half is spent putting everything into practice working through an example study.

NHS England Long term plan is published 

The NHSE Long Term plan is the plan for the NHS over the next 10 years with clear commitment that research will play its part in ensuring this is possible.

There is recognition of our excellent capabilities for research and innovation across the UK and their importance in improving mortality rates in hospitals and driving forward future medical advance. There is a clear commitment to growing more commercial and collaborative R&D, more real world testing and the linking of data (genomic, clinical and patient), as well as ensuring the fast spread of proven innovations via colleagues in the AHSNs.

A strong emphasis on prevention, primary care and mental health services shows the direction of travel and there is much in the plan around clinical priorities, enabling digital technologies and service re-designs.

How this will be implemented over time is the next step but research has a key part to play, is valued and very much part of the NHS of the future.

The plan sets out an expectation that:

  • We increase the number of people registering to participate in health research to one million by 2023/24.
  • People will be able to view opportunities to participate and register their interest on the NHS App by 2020
  • Performance on adopting proven innovations and on research including in mental health services will become part of core NHS performance metrics and assessment systems, as well as benchmarking data

Excess Treatment Costs update

Forum members continue to provide feedback and views from both provider and commissioning perspective on the new ETC process as the pilot phase rolls out. It is however really important that queries or challenging impacts are captured so that the scale of the issue can be identified. Therefore please report issues via supportmystudy@nihr.ac.ukwhere they will be collected, coded and collated for review.

The AcoRD Annex B FAQs have been updated by the Department of Health and Social Care to reflect the new arrangements for excess treatment costs, and are available to download from the NIHR website

Some additional updates have been made in connection with wider research delivery work, such as references to public health research.

New guidance is available from Public Health England for Managing Excess Treatment Costs for Research into Public Health Interventions Commissioned by Non-NHS Organisations in England

Improving commercial clinical research set up

The second of the new NHSE pilot schemes is to improve commercial clinical research set-up by implementing a standard costing methodology. As this rolls out Forum members are linked into the national oversight of this project. Email info@rdforum.org.uk with any comments or queries.

Statement from the Association of British Insurers – Participation in clinical trials and travel insurance  

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) have confirmed that participation in clinical trials does not affect eligibility criteria for travel insurance and have now withdrawn their guidance document “Clinical research trials and insurance”.

1. Service users as co-applicants, project leads and team members in research: A guide for research managers

This publication is the result of work by members of the Forum service user and carer working group following their own personal experience

This guide has been produced following extensive consultation across the NHS R&D Forum, and in conjunction with National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) INVOLVE and HRA, who have produced accompanying guidelines for researchers and the public.

2. Public co-applicants in research: guidance on roles and responsibilities.   

New guidance has been published for public co-applicants in research from NIHR INVOLVE with the NHS R&D Forum and HRA. This guidance is intended to help:

  • Researchers wanting to include public co-applicants in a study
  • Public contributors wanting to become a co-applicant
  • Research staff who coordinate public involvement activities or advise on funding applications

Those working in or with research organisations to review or process research applications.

CHART: Community Health Care Alliance of Research Trusts in England

On the 7th November 2018 The Community Healthcare Alliance of Research Trusts known as CHART held its launch. This was an NHS Community Trust initiative hosted by Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. The day was an enormous success with interactive discussions to plan the future and immediate next steps for the alliance.

There was clear support from organisations and agreement in the benefit of connecting through an alliance. Opportunities to discuss the challenges experienced in community trusts, working to increase their research activity were made to speak to NIHR, CRN and AHSN with recognition of similarities across organisations. Next steps are being planned as we write, with an update soon. Exciting time for community trusts.

R&D Manager secondment opportunity to support delivery of the NHSE programme for Commercial Contract Research

The NIHR CRN coordinating centre is looking to second an individual (2-3 days per week) to join the multi-agency team to lead on delivery of this high profile national project.  Remote working arrangements are possible, with occasional travel to London and/or Leeds based CRN or stakeholder offices.

Research Fish submission window opens 4th Feb – 14th March 2019. 

Organisations that host NIHR research and personal awards (not infrastructure awards) are required to report annually through Research fish whilst the award is active and for 5 years after completion.

The next submission window will open 4th February and close 4pm 14th March 2019 and so if you host awards there are a number of things you should do next.
