NIHR UPDATE: My Research Experience – supporting better research through participant feedback
Date: 24 April 2026
The NIHR collects feedback from people taking part in research to better understand their experiences and improve how studies are delivered. This has previously been known as the Participant in Research Experience Survey (PRES).
From 1 April 2026, this survey has been relaunched as My Research Experience (MRE).
The new name is designed to be clearer and more meaningful for participants, helping to increase awareness and engagement across research studies.
Alongside the name change, several important updates have been introduced:
- A revised adult question set, developed with input from participants and delivery staff
- A digital-first platform with improved accessibility features
- The ability for participants to provide feedback more than once during a study
These changes make it easier for participants to share their experiences and for research teams to access timely, actionable feedback.
What does this mean for research teams?
My Research Experience is designed to support high-quality research delivery. Routinely offering the survey to participants can help teams:
- Identify and address issues early
- Improve participant experience and retention
- Strengthen the overall quality of research delivery
We encourage all research teams to offer My Research Experience to every eligible participant, and where appropriate, at multiple points throughout the study.
Ensuring participants have the opportunity to share their experience is a key part of delivering inclusive, participant-centred research.
A national communications campaign will launch in June to further support awareness and uptake of My Research Experience.
