Changes to the Excess Treatment Costs (ETC) national payment system

Date: 17 December 2024

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), National Institute for Health and Care Research Research Delivery Network Coordinating Centre (NIHR RDNCC) and NHS England (NHSE) have introduced a single national system to simplify the administration of Excess Treatment Costs (ETCs) for researchers, funders and academics.

Due to this, any new NHSE commissioned studies (such as specialised commissioned) have been brought into the existing National ETC Payment System, and will be managed by the RDNCC.

These studies will be treated in the same way as the existing Integrated Care Board studies and will be assigned one of 8 payment models as agreed with the Chief Investigator or Sponsor.

All studies will now follow the same process and guidance as the National ETC Payments. Please find existing studies and assigned payment models here.
